He went on to leave his family farm to travel to California to pursue his interests, gaining interest from investors with his brilliance and innovation. He received the patent for the first electronic television on August 26, 1930, after tinkering with various methods of image transmitting. There was much strife for the young inventor as an employee of RCA visited his laboratory and began an arduous battle over patent licensing. After ten years, Farnsworth was awarded $1 million from the company. He went on to be granted hundreds of patents for various other inventions including a baby incubator and nuclear fusion tubes. A lifelong tinkerer, Farnsworth worked up until his death in 1971.:
